LATIN NAME: Rhododendron prunifolium
COMMON NAME: Plumleaf Azalea
FAMILY: Ericaceae
TYPE: Deciduous shrub
ORIGIN: Southeastern United States
GARDEN USES: Woodland Shade Garden
LOCATION AT THE RESERVE: Birch Garden
FUN FACT: One of the last rhododendrons to bloom at Bloedel Reserve, this stunning species is also a longtime staff favorite. Its vibrant orange to bright red flowers, accented by elegantly long stamens, create a striking contrast against the dark green, plum-like foliage. These eye-catching blooms aren’t just admired by people; they’re also an excellent nectar source for swallowtail butterflies and hummingbirds.
