From Our Backyard to Yours
3/31/2020 — Welcome to “Virtual” Bloedel Reserve
In the coming weeks, we’ll showcase the plants and wildlife making their appearance at Bloedel Reserve this spring. You’ll hear from some of our Creative Residents. And we’ll share stories about how you can bring a bit of Bloedel Reserve into your own backyard. Stay safe. Be well. Wash your hands.
Horticulture & Design: What’s in Bloom
These are just some of the flowering plants that are moving from our greenhouses into the Rhododendron Glen. All but the rhododendron, of course, which is already blooming in the Glen. Creativity & Inspiration: Staying Connected
Our Creative Residency Program brings artists and innovative thinkers to Bloedel Reserve to spend time communing with nature and developing their work. Until now. Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 epidemic, our March Resident, visual artist Nathan DiPietro, had to leave his residency early. And our April Resident, writer and poet CMarie Fuhrman, has postponed her residency until April 2021.
So for now, we are pleased to virtually introduce you to some of our Residents and their work at home, wherever that may be. This week, CMarie explores our changing world in her article The Language of the Pandemic.
Conservation & Stewardship: Waste Not, Want Not.
Did you know that the wattle fencing you see all around our landscapes is handmade by our Grounds & Horticulture Manager Joe DeMaio, using big leaf maple and native hazelnut branches? It is just one of the many ways we conserve and reuse the natural materials found on the grounds. Photos courtesy of Joe DeMaio. (Hover over or click images to see more details.)
