From Our Backyard to Yours

5/7/2020 — Welcome to this week’s “virtual visit” to Bloedel Reserve.

Creativity & Inspiration:
Catherine Alice Michaelis

Catherine Alice Michaelis is a talented visual artist and printer whose limited edition books celebrate the natural world. Catherine was to be our Creative Resident during the month of May.  Catherine was also planning to mark the anniversary of her printing business — May Day Press — this month. But then COVID-19 turned everything on its head. Catherine’s stay at the Reserve has been postponed until May 2021. In the meantime, here are her musings on the being a working artist during this unforeseen pandemic.

Horticulture & Design:  The Sand and Stone Garden

The Japanese Garden at Bloedel Reserve is considered one of the best in the world. One of its most prominent and unique features is its Sand and Stone Garden. Read more about how we maintain this serene garden of gravel and stone.

Nature & Well-Being:
Strolls at Home Week 4

This week’s theme is Transition. We know that spring is a huge time of transition in nature. But transitions are happening in the natural world and in our own lives all the time. What transitions are you experiencing?

Horticulture & Design:  Plant Pick of the Month

Our plant pick for the month of May is “False Solomon’s Seal.” Click here to find out more about this member of the asparagus family.

Conservation & Stewardship:  Weeds 101

Don’t let those bright yellow blossoms fool you! Scotch Broom is a noxious weed that can wreak havoc on a landscape. Learn more about how the grounds team at the Reserve battles this invader.
