Catherine Alice Michaelis
Creative Resident — POSTPONED until May 2021

Catherine Alice Michaelis lives in the woods near the Salish Sea. She has been making artist’s books under the May Day Press imprint since 1992. Catherine creates book structures containing original text and images you can hold in your hand. Her primary themes are plants and their uses, focusing on seeds and flowers. Her love of plants was cultivated through the teachings of her grandmother. More recently Catherine’s work has included issues of gender and queerness.

In 2019, Catherine received the Mona Lisa Roberts Visual Arts Fellowship for an artist residency at Mineral School.

In 2017, she was featured in Craft in America’s “Nature” episode on PBS. Ninety institutions have collected Catherine’s work, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Getty Research Institute, and the Library of Congress. She has had solo shows at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art and the University of Puget Sound, among other regional venues.

Catherine will be in residence at Bloedel Reserve in May 2020.
