From Our Backyard to Yours
4/22/2020 — Happy Earth Day
Did you know that April 22 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day? Begun as a series of college “teach-ins” in 1970, Earth Day is considered the start of what is now an international environmental movement. Learn more about Earth Day and the direction environmentalism is taking in the 21st century.
Because conserving and protecting the natural environment is at the very heart of our mission, every day is Earth Day at Bloedel Reserve.
Nature & Well-Being: Strolls at Home
We launched Strolls at Home last week and your response has been incredibly gratifying. We’ll be posting new themes and prompts in the weeks to come. The theme for this week’s Stroll is Possibility.
And here are links to several short videos that bring the peaceful sights and sounds of the Reserve to you:
Horticulture & Design: What’s In Bloom
The flowering plants and shrubs are making quite a show at the Reserve. Here are just a few colorful examples:
Creativity & Inspiration: Poetry by Judith Bowles
We continue our celebration of National Poetry Month with this offering from Judith Bowles, from her collection The Gathering. Judith was a Creative Resident at Bloedel Reserve in 2019. Read more about her here.
Measure for Measure
Let the morning be quiet
the cool air message be everything
except the dew settled
silent and brief.
May there be nothing unhushed
except breathing, its soft percussion
and the song of a speechless heart
which gives and receives in measure
so utterly equal, its action
replenishes itself.
Abandon all stories for this one.
Put your hand on your chest
or your throat or your wrist
feel the rich coursing motion
that proves air made liquid
becomes air again.
Conservation & Stewardship: Preparing the Pumpkin Patch
The Super Squash Scavenger Hunt is a month-long October tradition at Bloedel Reserve. We hide hundreds of squash and pumpkins around the grounds for our guests to find and identify. In order to be ready for fall, we start cultivating the pumpkins and squash now.
And using recycled materials, we build a special patch and cover structure to protect the giant pumpkins as they grow. Watch how it’s done.
