PLANT OF THE MONTH

July 2023–Rhododendron prunifolium

Common Name:  Plumleaf Azalea

Family:  Ericaceae

Type:  Deciduous shrub

Origin:  Southeastern United States

Location at Bloedel Reserve:  Birch Garden

Garden Uses:  Woodland Shade Garden

Fun Fact:  This is one of the last rhododendrons to bloom here at Bloedel Reserve and one of our staff favorites. The orange to bright red flowers with elegantly long stamens, contrast beautifully with the dark green plum-like leaves. The flowers are not only enjoyed by us but also provide an important nectar source for swallowtail butterflies and hummingbirds.
