Fun Fact: This species of orchid, C. maculata, lacks chlorophyll and is myco-heterotrophic, which means it utilizes ectomycorrhizal fungi from the genus Russula to obtain energy from the roots of trees growing nearby. The specific epithet, maculata, means “spotted” and is in reference to the purple spots on the lip of flower.
