PLANT OF THE MONTH

MAY 2021 — Mayapple

Common Name: Mayapple

Latin Name: Podophyllum peltatum

Family: Berberidaceae

Type: Herbaceous perennial

Origin: Eastern North America

Location at Bloedel Reserve: Rhododendron Glen

Garden Uses: Shade garden (giving it space to naturalize would be great)

Fun Fact: Not an apple at all (and not always blooming precisely in May), this Missouri native wildflower emerges from our perennial beds in early spring, quickly unraveling tall and wide, deeply lobed, palmate leaves.

From the leaf axil, a single 6-petaled white flower will appear. The genus name come from the Greek word podos meaning foot, and phyllon meaning leaf.
