PLANT OF THE MONTH

February 2023 —Pinus wallichiana

Latin Name: Pinus wallichiana

Common Name: Himalayan Pine

Family: Pinaceae

Type: Evergreen conifer

Origin: Himalayas

Locations at Bloedel Reserve: Pine Arboretum

Garden Uses: Specimen Tree

Fun Fact: This soft, long needled white pine is native to the foothills of the Himalayas and was recently planted by our arborist, Fen Vitello, in our Pine Arboretum. This specimen will develop a rounded crown 30-50 feet tall and long, pendulous needles as it ages. The specific epithet honors the Danish botanist, Nathaniel Wallich, who first introduced seeds to England in 1827.

Logged in the 1950’s, this portion of the property–located across from the North Parking Lot–was rye pasture before being planted with ornamental specimen trees in the late 1960s, distinguishing it from the front entry and establishing the Arboretum as a distinct garden space at the Reserve.
