Nature & Well-Being:
Strolls at Home Week 7

Joy is the theme for this week’s walk. Joy comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. What elements will you find in nature that will spark joy for you this week?

Horticulture & Design:
Not a Skunk, Not a Cabbage

This bright yellow bloom is a sure sign that spring has arrived at the Reserve. Learn more about this beautiful, if somewhat smelly, plant that adds its distinctive shape and color to the Bloedel landscape.

Horticulture & Design:
Artful Arrangements

Cathy Tyler has been the florist at Bloedel Reserve for more than 11 years. She began her relationship with the Reserve first as a visitor and then as volunteer before heading up the floral operations. She and her team of volunteers create the stunning seasonal arrangements that grace the Residence year-round, all of which are made from flowers grown in the Bloedel Reserve cutting garden and from stock found around the grounds. In this video, Cathy shares some tips for creating a fragrant, long-lasting arrangement of spring lilacs.

Creativity & Inspiration:
Jenny Maybee

A Creative Resident at Bloedel Reserve in 2018, Jenny Maybee has created a stunning 30-day photo essay documenting her experience here. Jenny is a nationally recognized pianist, vocalist, and composer/arranger. Her recent release, Love Letters from the Garden, is a book of art and poetry accompanied by a full album of music that was also inspired by her time at the Reserve.

Here is a short poem from that collection:

I invite you into this gate
Leave your longing behind
Behold the ecstasy of your thoughts
When they are freed from swimming in sadness
Leaping like a bright orange flash
A koi springing from its home
To catch the moon
