What’s In Bloom in Late May

When we say there is always something new to see at Bloedel Reserve, we mean it. In late May, rhododendrons dominate. But there are other captivating florals to find. The Candelabra Primroses near the Christmas Pond and the Lupine in the meadow adjacent to the Buxton Bird Marsh spring to mind.

HORTICULTURE & DESIGN

Plant of the Month

For the month of May, Horticulture team member Sean Peterson has selected a plant that belies its name. The Mayapple is not an apple and it doesn’t always come into full bloom in May, though it is definitely one of the early spring perennials filling the beds in the Rhododendron Glen. Read more about it here.

What’s Blooming Now

Here’s your guide to what’s blooming during the month of May. Download and print it for your next visit to the Reserve and see how many of these colorful May flowers and shrubs you can spot.

CREATIVITY & INSPIRATION

Welcome Creative Resident Catherine Michaelis

Book artist, illustrator, and printer Catherine Alice Michaelis was scheduled to visit the Reserve in 2020. But like many of our 2020 Creative Residents, COVID forced us to postpone her residency.

So we are especially delighted to have her on the grounds and in residence this month. And we look forward to hearing about her experiences while she’s at the Reserve.

GREEN MEANS GROW

May is Membership Month

Have you seen these signs around the Reserve? “Green Means Grow” is the theme for our May membership drive.

If you’re not already a member, please consider purchasing a Bloedel Reserve membership this month. There are lots of good reasons to do so — free admission all year long, discounts in the Shop, members-only time slots for visiting, reciprocal privileges at public gardens all over the country. And, of course membership dollars help keep the Reserve open and thriving. We’ve made it even easier to join when you’re at the Reserve. Find a sign, point your smartphone camera at the QR code, and sign up online.

Don’t know what a QR code is? No smart phone? No problem. You can also see all of the membership details and sign up here.
