WHAT WE’RE READING…

Just after we sent out last week’s E-Newsletter, The New York Times published “Greet Spring with a Visit to a Public Garden,” a wonderful compendium of eight gardens located all across the United States that offer visitors unique horticultural experiences and are worth a special trip this spring. Bloedel Reserve was lucky enough to be one of the eight chosen for the article. Our thanks to writer Cameron Walker who beautifully captured what the Reserve is all about. (Hint: Bloedel Reserve is final garden described in the article, accompanied by a photo of the Moss Garden.) You can read the article here.

Watch What Happens

Our Creative Residents have been extremely busy this month and, happily, much of what they have been up to has been captured on video.  On March 20th, Creative Resident and Suquamish Elder Ed Carriere demonstrated the cedar-splitting techniques that are fundamental to the baskets he makes. The virtual workshop was held at Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network (BARN) and captured on video. Watch Ed’s demonstration here.

Creative Fellow and painter Kimberly Trowbridge was just interviewed by Nancy Guppy for her program Art Zone, which is broadcast on the Seattle Channel. You can watch the Trowbridge interview here. Or see the entire program here.

March in the Garden

In addition to our popular Plant of the Month picks, many of you have asked for a quick reference guide to what’s blooming at the Reserve each month.

We heard you! We’re launching a new monthly guide to the blooming plants and changes in the foliage on the grounds, starting with March in the Garden. Download the guide before your next visit and see how many of these spring bloomers you can spot.

And Speaking of Blooms…

Here’s a puzzle that will blossom before your eyes… when you solve it, that is.

WHAT WE’RE READING …

March is officially Women’s History Month. In honor of the occasion, Bloedel Reserve President & CEO Ed Moydell has written an essay about influential women in the field of horticulture and public garden design. He also touches on his own personal journey into the field, beginning with memories of garden time spent with his grandmother.  You can read it here.

And Bloedel Reserve is in the press again this month. NW Travel & Life Magazine has featured the Reserve in its March/April issue. Click here to read the article. Thanks to articles like this one, we hope to welcome lots of new visitors to the Reserve this spring.
