Takako Satoh Plays the Koto

Enjoy the backdrop of the Japanese Garden as Takako Satoh plays the beautiful stringed instrument called the koto. Considered the national instrument of Japan, the koto originally came to Japan from China in the 7th century. The instrument’s shape has evolved over time. In its current form, the koto is about six feet long with 13 plucked strings and 13 movable bridges for tuning. Listeners will instantly recognize its distinctive sound — lyrical and otherworldly. Takako Satoh performs on the deck of the Japanese Guest House, weather permitting. The concert is free with admission to Bloedel Reserve.
