Field Notes 2020: Naoko Morisawa

Painterly Precision

Naoko Morisawa is widely known for her wood mosaics. But her skills as an illustrator and painter can’t be denied. In this video, she takes her inspiration from a leaf found on a walk.

Magical Moss Garden

In this series of photos, Naoko shares her process of going from a sketch, inspired by the Moss Garden, to a colorful wood mosaic. She describes her approach this way:
“Everyone basically has a beautiful image of green and shape, but the broad abstract image of moss in artwork does not have to be limited to one green color. [That] is a photographer’s job. I think colorful images of moss are fine. I would like to draw the image of moss in various colors such as red, orange, and blue (in part). I hopefully would like to arrange the magical moss world into an abstract work.”

Portraits, Patterns & More

These images reflect the wide range of Naoko’s work — from ornamented shoes  and Edo-style portraiture to color motifs and patterns rooted in Japonism and monyo design. See more of her work at naokomorisawa.com.
