Creating Characters, Comics, and Art, Inspired by the Flora and Fauna of Bloedel Reserve

Come learn about cartooning basics while turning the plants and animals of Bloedel Reserve into characters, comics, and magical creatures. From sketching with graphite while “penciling” characters and their backgrounds, to inking bold lines and shadows and adding color inspired by nature, we’ll explore character design, fantasy worlds, and fun storytelling techniques. Participants may choose to create a one-page illustration or a four-panel comic in a simple accordion book structure. Draw, imagine, and let the Reserve spark your creativity! All materials will be provided.

This class is geared to 4th – 8th graders and/or adults who are young-at-heart.

Donna Letterese, a Bloedel Reserve Community Creative, loves creating comics, cartoons, handmade books, nature journals, and flora/fauna based illustration.  She has been teaching since 2010, and since 2020, she teaches children and adults both in person and online.  Donna teaches at places such as Barnsdall Art Center in Los Angeles, and Bainbridge BARN, Kitsap Art Center, and Olympic College Continuing Education here in Kitsap County.  She is excited to share her observations of the plants and animals that she has observed at Bloedel, and loves when students can be inspired to create their own visual narratives based on nature.
