PLANT OF THE MONTH
April 2022 —Mt. Fuji Cherry
Latin Name: Prunus serrulata ‘Shiro-fugen’
Family: Rosaceae
Type: Deciduous tree
Origin: South America and mountainous areas of Southeast Asia
Location at Bloedel Reserve: Japanese Garden Meadow
Garden Uses: Specimen tree, flowers best in full sun
Fun Fact: Planted in the early 1980s, this is one of our staff’s favorite specimen flowering trees. A pair of these trees were moved from next to the Japanese Guesthouse out into the meadow, however only this single specimen survived. In Japan, it is a tradition to feast and celebrate under the flowering cherries.
