From Our Backyard to Yours

6/12/2020 — Welcome to this week’s “virtual visit” to Bloedel Reserve.

Horticulture & Design:
The Reflection Pool

One of the most striking landscapes on the Reserve is hidden away behind tall yew hedges. The Reflection Pool is a stark and dramatic contrast to the forest that surround it. Read more about its construction, its unusual water source, and its special significance for the Bloedel family.

Plant of the Month:
Chilean Lantern Tree

Grounds and Horticulture Associate Sean Petersen has picked the Chilean Lantern Tree as June’s Plant of the Month. A definite contender as a Bloedel staff favorite this time of year, its vivid red blooms are irresistible to both humans and hummingbirds.

Creativity & Inspiration:
Pathways with Mike and Laura Bartunek

We’re thrilled to welcome father and daughter Mike and Laura Bartunek to Bloedel Reserve as our Creative Residents for the month of June. They are our first Residents to be able to stay on the grounds since our recent closure. Both architects and visual artists, Mike and Laura take decidedly different approaches to their art. Here they share some of their conversations about art and nature, as well as some of the work they produced during their first week at the Reserve.

Nature & Well-Being:
Strolls at Home Week 9

Trust can be as delicate as a dragonfly’s wing or as solid as a tree trunk. How does the concept of trust manifest itself in the natural world? What does it mean to truly trust?
