From Our Backyard to Yours
6/4/2020 — Welcome to this week’s “virtual visit” to Bloedel Reserve.
Horticulture & Design:
Blooms in the Meadow
As part of the renovation and redesign of the Buxton Bird Marsh and Meadow, an extensive planting took place earlier this year. The hope was to create a habitat that would attract pollinating insects to the Reserve, where they play an integral part of the grounds ecosystem. Flowers have been planted in color waves so that guests will be greeted by an ever-changing landscape all season long. Here are just a few of the early blooms making their meadow debuts. These photos are courtesy of photographer, volunteer and long-time friend of the Reserve Elliot Green.
Alpine Water Fern
This little fern makes a colorful impact in both the Moss and Japanese Gardens at Bloedel Reserve. Learn more here about this native from the Southern Hemisphere.
Creativity & Inspiration:
Anna Brones
A Creative Resident at Bloedel Reserve in 2018, Anna Brones is a writer, film producer, and visual artist. The Vashon Center for the Arts recently featured Anna’s Women’s Wisdom Project, her series of 100 paper-cut portraits of extraordinary women, many of whom have championed the preservation of our natural world. Each portrait is hand-cut from a single piece of paper and features an accompanying quote. These are just a few examples. You can see the entire series here.
Nature & Well-Being:
