November 2023–Vitis davidii
Common Name: David’s Grape, Spiny Vitis
Family: Vitaceae
Type: Deciduous Vine
Origin: East Asia, China
Location at Bloedel Reserve: The Residence
Garden Uses: Fall color, Trellis
Fun Fact: This grape was first discovered by Père David in Shensi in 1872 and introduced to Kew in 1885. At Bloedel Reserve, we introduced this specimen in 2004 and have enjoyed watching the vine’s growth progress to cover the north facing wall of the Residence. The young shoots are covered in hooked bristles which one is sure to notice after being drawn in by the brilliant deep burgundy fall color!
