Have you ever wondered how our state-of-the-art compost facility works? Our 2023 Horticulture & Design summer interns each chose a topic they felt passionate about communicating to our visitors. Enjoy this tour through how we make “black gold”, by Brennan Krantz.
These vibrant grass clippings, freshly collected from our manicured lawns, are the green foundation of our composting journey. Once mixed with brown materials, they’ll transform into nutrient-rich goodness that feeds our garden’s soul.
Our composting bins are a symphony of brown treasures like decaying leaves, shredded paper, and even eco-friendly packing peanuts. This perfect blend of carbon-richness adds depth to our compost, which awaits to be mixed with green materials that nurture the soil that supports our garden’s splendor.
What you’re looking at is the result of combining one part green material (think grass clippings) with three parts brown materials (like fallen leaves and shredded paper). This rich, crumbly compost is a testament to the beauty of balance and transformation.
Behold the heart of our composting prowess – a bin equipped with Aerated Static Pile technology. Those unassuming pipes towards the bottom deliver a breeze of hot air throughout the pile, igniting a symphony of decomposition within. It’s a dance of science and sustainability, ensuring our compost thrives without missing a beat.
