Plein Air Painting for Beginners with Gigi Godfrey

Painting on location allows artists to capture the emotional and sensory spirit of a moment in time. The plein air experience can be a challenge with changing light and weather. This workshop is designed to encourage a relaxed and fun approach to painting outdoors. The morning will include a review of materials & equipment, followed by a short demonstration using some general guidelines in exploring composition, simplifying large masses, and observing nuances in color. Most of the time will be spent painting and getting feedback.

Bring what equipment you have, keep it simple and light. Include a portable chair/stool if you have one. Bag lunches are allowed in the parking area. Bring a water bottle and a sun hat or visor—sunglasses are not effective for plein air painting. Dress for the weather. Plan to paint more than one scene, remember that the light changes! Gigi teaches primarily oils, acrylics, or gouache. However, many of the principles that will be reviewed cross over to most mediums.
