SUMMARY:Plein Air Painting for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Plein Air Painting for Beginners with Gigi Godfrey\nPainting on location allows artists to capture the emotional and sensory spirit of a moment in time. The plein air experience can be a challenge with changing light and weather. This workshop is designed to encourage a relaxed and fun approach to painting outdoors. The morning will include a review of materials & equipment\, followed by a short demonstration using some general guidelines in exploring composition\, simplifying large masses\, and observing nuances in color. Most of the time will be spent painting and getting feedback. \nBring what equipment you have\, keep it simple and light. Include a portable chair/stool if you have one. Bag lunches are allowed in the parking area. Bring a water bottle and a sun hat or visor—sunglasses are not effective for plein air painting. Dress for the weather. Plan to paint more than one scene\, remember that the light changes! Gigi teaches primarily oils\, acrylics\, or gouache. However\, many of the principles that will be reviewed cross over to most mediums. \nWHERE\nMeet in Arrival Garden \nWHEN\nMay 20\, 10:45 – 4:00 PM \nCOST\n$110 Members\n$150 Non-members (includes admission to the Reserve)\nA view finder and value scale are included in the price. \nNot a member yet? SUMMARY:Tintype Family Portraits (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:Tintype Family Portraits\nA Mother’s Day gift to remember! Tintype photographer and current Creative Resident\, Megan Karson\, will be on site creating unique handmade 4”x5” family portraits. Tintype photography was developed in the 1850s and was popular for portraiture\, especially during the Civil War era. These archival heirloom quality photographs are made using a metal plate coated with a specially prepared light sensitive emulsion. After a brief light exposure while taking the photograph\, the plate is then developed in a dark room. Only 14 spots are available. \nNote: This will take place outdoors. Cover from rain will be provided\, if necessary. Portraits will be available to pick up a few days after the event. \nWHERE\nYou will be directed when you arrive at the Reserve. \nWHEN\nMay 11\, 30-minute appointments from 9:30 AM through 5 PM \nCOST\n$85 Members\n$125 Non-members\, includes price of admission \nNot a member yet? Join here \nSOLD OUT\nNotes: Megan will send you a scan of your plate once the session is over\, and you are free to make copies of it as you please. Wear what makes you feel most comfortable and most like yourselves\, as these photos are a look into each person’s unique life. That being said\, here are some suggestions that pertain mostly to the nature of collodion photography. \n\nSolid black and solid white are not recommended because they take up so much attention and space in the image. Cool colors tend to appear much lighter and warm colors tend to darken (I.e blue will lighten and red will darken)\nThese images will develop backwards on the plate so any clothing with words will appear reversed\nPatterns\, textures and accessories add a lot of visual interest and character to the image

SUMMARY:Nature and the Book: 2025 Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Nature and the Book: 2025\nSponsored by Puget Sound Book Artists \nBloedel Reserve is pleased to present “Nature and the Book: 2025”\, a compelling exhibition showcasing the work of artists whose creative practices are deeply inspired by the natural world. This exhibition highlights the dynamic intersection between nature\, art\, and the printed page\, exploring themes of sustainability\, climate change\, and the inherent beauty found in the environment. Locating this exhibit in the Founders’ former residence at the Reserve pays homage to their passion for collecting books focused on the natural world. The exhibit is organized by the Puget Sound Book Artists (PSBA) organization and Bloedel Reserve. \nFrom intricate depictions of plant life to reflections on ecological change\, the pieces in this exhibit use the book form as a medium to express both the fragility and resilience of our natural surroundings. Artists have drawn upon their unique environments in the Pacific Northwest and beyond\, bringing attention to the patterns\, colors\, and textures found in the flora and fauna that surround us. \nIncluded in the exhibit are former creative residents of the Reserve including Lou Cabeen\, Pamela Wachtler-Fermanis\, Catherine Alice Michaelis and Jan Dove. \nPSBA\, now in its 15th year\, is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to creating a spirit of community among book artists and those who love books. PSBA members use a wide variety of creative means and methods to create interactive artist books that delight the viewer\, convey an idea\, communicate an experience\, express a concern\, spark a conversation\, and tell stories. \nWHERE\nThe Residence at Bloedel Reserve \nWHEN \nMarch 4 – April 27\, 2025\nWinter hours are Tuesday – Sunday 10 AM-4 PM; last entry is 90 minutes before closing \nCOST\nFree with admission to Bloedel Reserve. Timed tickets are available for advance purchase online here. \nNot a member yet? Join here \nDon’t miss a panel discussion with some of the artists on April 1 – details here. \nMeet one of the curators\, Jane Carlin\, at the Residence on March 22 or April 2.
