SUMMARY:Ikebana Open House
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to stage this Ikebana show as we celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the founding of the Sogetsu School by flower master Sofu Teshigahara. Like his European contemporaries who became impressionist artists\, Ikebana masters followed a similar path. While steeped in the philosophy and principles of classical Ikebana\, they explored a more improvisational approach to design. Sofu taught his students to design not just what they saw with their eyes\, but more from what they felt in their hearts. His European counterpart\, Pablo Picasso put this beautifully\, “If you want to draw\, you must first close your eyes and sing.” Please come visit the show and see how Charles Coghlan and his students have played with the flowers. They never cease to amaze!! \nWHERE   \nThe Ikebana will be on display at the Japanese Guest House   \nWHEN   \nMay 8-10\, Noon to 3 PM each day \nCOST \nFree\, included with admission \nPlease note: May 10th is Mother’s Day and we are having an event that day. We sell out several days in advance for Mother’s Day\, so book your admission tickets early. \nTICKETS\nNot a member yet? Join here

SUMMARY:Ikebana Talk with Charles Coghlan (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with our Ikebana Open House May 8-10\, Charles Coghlan will be doing an Ikebana Talk on May 8th. \nGrowing up on a farm in Missouri’s Ozark Mountains\, Charles moved with his family in the early 1950s to California where he earned an MA in religion. Leaving Los Angeles in the mid 70s\, Charles headed north to Washington’s Columbia River Valley where he learned to prune apple trees. In 1980 it was love at first sight when he saw Ikebana\, which turns pruning into a fine art. Studying under Master Sensei\, Aiko Ii\, student of Sofu Teshigahara\, founder of the modern Sogetsu School of Ikebana\, he earned his teaching certificate and began taking students in 1995. Charles continues now with students and friends to explore this ever intriguing and fascinating art form. \nWHERE   \nThe talk and Ikebana display will be at the Japanese Guest House   \nWHEN   \nMay 8\, 1-1:45 PM \nCOST\nCapacity is limited to 20 spots so register to save your seat. \nFree for Members\nIncluded with admission for Non-members \nSOLD OUT\nNot a member yet? SUMMARY:Film Screening with Anna Kipervaser
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a program of Anna’s lyrical experimental films that attune to marine environments\, where the sea becomes a site of ritual\, myth\, and transformation\, where beginnings and endings fold into one another\, echoed by terrestrial visions of death\, rebirth\, and reanimation. Moving between silence and sound\, stillness and drift\, the films navigate thresholds of visibility\, loss\, regeneration\, and apparition. Together\, these works form a meditation on ecological entanglement and fragile\, persistent imprints of presence. There is time allotted for questions and discussion. \nAnna Kipervaser is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice engages with a range of topics including perception\, human and animal bodies\, ethnicity\, religion\, colonialism\, and environmental conservation. Her practice is informed by a commitment to formal experimentation\, DIY and alternative processes across experimental and documentary moving image works in both 16mm film and video. Anna’s work screens at festivals\, in classrooms\, galleries\, museums\, microcinemas\, basements\, and schoolhouses! Anna is also a painter\, printmaker\, educator\, curator of exhibitions\, programmer of screenings. \nWHERE   \nMeet in the Japanese Guest House \nWHEN   \nMay 14\, 10:30-12 PM \nCOST \nFree for Members\nNon-members\, included with admission \nReserve your seat! \nTICKETS\nNot a member yet?
