SUMMARY:Mapping Relations with Aditi Kini
DESCRIPTION:Mapping Relations: A participatory\, reflective\, visual exercise\nJoin Aditi Kini\, Bloedel Reserve Creative Resident\, for this unusual and engaging experience around writing and mapping. \n“Writing has nothing to do with meaning. It has to do with land-surveying and cartography\, including the mapping of countries yet to come.” – Gilles Deleuze \nMaps have defined our world: our borders\, our struggles\, our opportunities. They are part of every story—after all\, we have to get from point A to point B somehow. \nThe romantic notion of the flâneur still holds sway over the imagination of the budding writer. If only we could be so free\, detached\, and observant as Baudelaire or Benjamin—if only we could read the streets like text. The situationist dériviste (Debord) is more unpredictable\, and their movement through urban space disrupts its functional logic. Thoreau’s saunterer walks through nature unharried and unbothered\, “in the spirit of undying adventure”. \nBut what about walking through gardens\, through spaces that have been landscaped\, that present a deliberate marriage between the old and the new\, the tamed and the wild? In this workshop\, we will map our relations to the grounds\, our relations to all grounds and their histories\, discuss maps and mapping\, walking and talking. This exercise invites participants to pay attention to their unpredictable\, unstable relations with their surroundings. Each participant will create an idiosyncratic map. \nBring journal\, pen\, walking shoes\, water bottle\, anything else you may need. Perhaps bring a map that’s important to you. \nWHERE\nMeet at the Arrival Garden \nWHEN\nJuly 3\, 10:00 – Noon \nCOST\n$15 for Members\n$15 plus admission for Non-Members \nNot a member yet? SUMMARY:Floral Shapes in Glass & Fiber (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:Garden Inspirations: Floral Shapes in Glass and Fiber\nJoin Bloedel Community Creative\, Stephanie Tayengco\, for an intimate look at what’s in bloom in the cutting garden\, an area seldom seen by visitors. You’ll use your observations and impressions of riotous colors and shapes that coevolved with their pollinators as inspiration to make your own wearable multimedia sculptures. \nWe’ll learn to needle felt into glass forms that will be provided\, resulting in personal mementos reflecting your unique experiences of the garden in naturalistic and fantasy forms. There will be time to complete one piece in class and you’ll leave with a new craft to continue exploring and materials to create a second piece on your own. \nOPTIONAL: There will be a free demonstration the day before at BARN where Stephanie will show how borosilicate tubing is turned into structures for mixed media glass and felted wool ornaments and jewelry\, which are the base forms we’ll be using during the workshop. \n* Register for the Bloedel Reserve workshop by clicking the TICKETS button below. \n* Register for the free optional demo at BARN on July 26 by clicking here. \nWHERE\nMeet at the Arrival Garden \nWHEN\nJuly 27\, 9:45 – 1:00 PM \nCOST (Materials Included)\n$35 Members\n$70 Non-members (includes the price of admission) \nNot a member yet? Join here \nSOLD OUT\nStephanie Tayengco \nStephanie Tayengco is a glass artist who works borosilicate with a torch to make sculptural forms. As the artist behind Studio Salamin\, she creates sculpture and digital interactive art that reflects and changes how you perceive\, playing with all three meanings of the Tagalog word salamin\, glass the material\, mirror\, and eyeglasses. Her most recent obsession is exploring art as time compression\, overlapping moments into a single space\, capturing ghostly hints of what’s been forgotten\, overlooked\, or displaced. \nWhile working in technology after years of studying art history\, Stephanie found she could merge her passions at a neon and physical computing class at Urban Glass in Brooklyn. She continued taking classes in torchworking there and at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle. Now you can find her in front of a torch at BARN on Bainbridge Island and follow her at studiosalamin.com and on Instagram @studiosalamin.
