I know strolling through the special landscape here centers me.” \nFatima Young is a favorite local artist\, as well as a valued Bloedel volunteer. Her latest series of works is called “Finding the Light: A Visualization in Nature.” Young began most of these paintings on site at Bloedel Reserve\, studying nature and simplifying what she observed to capture nature’s freshness and rhythm. \n \nChasing small miracles like the sun’s reflection on the Bird Marsh or the light peaking through the branches on the Birch Trail\, Young hopes to connect viewers to the landscape through her distinct style of painterly realism. Young uses a palette knife and a bold range of oils to create earth’s rich tones offset by bright contrasts in color and texture. One could say that Young’s paintings have the flair of Russian impressionism with a twist of the sublime. Born in Europe of Russian heritage\, Young earned her degrees from F.I.T. and C.W. Post University in New York. Bainbridge Island has been her home for decades.

Performance begins at 1:30 PM.\nWHERE:  Japanese Guest House\, outside deck\, weather permitting.\nTICKETS: Free with admission to Bloedel Reserve \nEnjoy the backdrop of the Japanese Garden as Takako Satoh plays the beautiful stringed instrument called the koto. Considered the national instrument of Japan\, the koto originally came to Japan from China in the 7th century. The instrument’s shape has evolved over time. In its current form\, the koto is about six feet long with 13 plucked strings and 13 movable bridges for tuning. Listeners will instantly recognize its distinctive sound — lyrical and otherworldly. Takako Satoh performs on the deck of the Japanese Guest House\, weather permitting. The concert is free with admission to Bloedel Reserve. \n

DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: William Bryant Logan\nWHEN: Friday\, September 27\, 2019\, 1 PM\nWHERE: The Residence at Bloedel Reserve\nTICKETS: Bloedel Reserve Members $15; Non-members $32 \nBuy Tickets\n ABOUT THE LECTURE: \nAward-winning author and arborist William Bryant Logan’s latest work Sprout Lands explores the ancient relationship between humans and trees and its implications for our future. Once\, people around the globe did not simply live beside or under trees. We lived with them\, taking from them and giving to them. Surprisingly\, perhaps\, this was not an exploitative but a cooperative relationship. Proper human care for the woodlands increased their diversity and promoted the numbers and kinds of insects\, birds and other creatures who lived among the trees and the open understory vegetation. Whole cultures were built around such woods. Logan explains that the ancient world is not just an idyl of the past\, but also a model for a future\, active relationship to our trees. He suggests a few ways in which we can start this living relationship anew. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER: William Bryant Logan is a certified arborist\, the founder\, and president of Urban Arborists\, Inc.\, and a faculty member at the New York Botanical Garden. Read his July 20th New York Times article “The Lessons of a Hideous Forest.” The author of four books and an award-winning garden writer\, he has written for House Beautiful\, House and Garden\, and Garden Design magazines\, in addition to his frequent contributions to the New York Times. \n
